ENLISTMENT

Becoming a member of the First Minnesota, Company D is simple. It starts by contacting one of our recruiters listed at the bottom of this page and requesting a membership application. The person you contact will want to talk to you directly before proceeding with the application. This is a good time to ask any questions you might have about joining our group. Your application will follow in a few days. Included will be a letter telling you where to return the application to and what amount of dues will be due (dues are prorated each year starting February 1).

Upon receipt of your membership application and check, you become a probationary member and are expected to attend 50% of unit events during the probation of one year. During this time, you are expected to learn the manual of arms, school of the company, and skirmish drill. Probationary members are given special instruction by the NCOs in order to bring them up to the level of the other members.

At the end of your probationary period, a vote is taken on your elevation to full membership. As a full member you have a vote in all unit business, are eligible to run for an administrative office, or apply to be an officer or NCO. Your membership continues as long as you pay membership dues each year.

Unlike many recreated Civil War units, the First Minnesota has high standards in both drill and equipment. Our members strive to maintain these standards and help new members become part of a team that does credit ourselves and to the men of the original First Minnesota.
